MS
Vista Information: StenoCAT 32 works successfully with
the Microsoft Vista® Operating system. However, we strongly
recommend turning off Vista's User Account Control (UAC) feature.
Explanation:
- Although
StenoCAT 32 will work with the Vista User Account Control
(UAC) feature turned on, Vista will "hide" the
location of your user files (jobs, dictionaries, etc.) in
what is called the "Virtual Store." StenoCAT 32
will recognize the Virtual Store, but the Virtual Store
is in a hidden location and can be difficult to locate when
using Windows Explorer.
- More
information can be found about the Vista UAC in Vista itself.
To access this information, go to START> HELP AND SUPPORT>
and enter "UAC" on the Search line.
Turning
off the User Account Control (UAC):
(You may do this before or after installing StenoCAT 32,
but it must be turned off before using the StenoCAT
32 program.)
- Go
to START> HELP AND SUPPORT> and enter "UAC".
- Choose
"Turn User Account Control on or off." Follow the steps
provided.
More
details about using SC32 with Vista:
- Leo,
the wizard: You will need to disable Leo, the wizard
character that pops up on your screen when StenoCAT 32 starts.
There are some incompatibilities that cause him to freeze.
(If this happens, you can use the Task Manager to End Task
on the AgentSvr.exe file.)
- To
disable Leo permanently, go to StenoCAT 32 Explorer>
Tools> Customize> uncheck Display Assistant on Startup>
choose OK.
- Insync:
Although audio works in Vista, there are some reports
that the SC32 Play/Rewind feature is more susceptible to
hanging or freezing. In most cases, avoiding the Rewind
feature is a sufficient workaround at this time. Customer
Care can help you with efficient ways of playing back audio
to alleviate this issue.
- Install
a printer driver: You will need to install a printer.
If you do not, the default printer in Vista will be the
'Microsoft XPS Document Writer', and this may cause a SC32
job to error when going into File> Page Setup. If you do
not have a printer, you can install any laser printer driver
located in Start> Control Panel> Printers.
-
Job compatibility: All StenoCAT files (jobs, dictionaries,
templates, etc.) have the same file structure, whether they
are used on Windows 98, ME, XP, or Vista. Therefore, all
files are compatible between these operating systems.
- Finding
the Virtual Store if your UAC is on.
- You
must first turn on Hidden Folders.
- Go
to Start> Computer. Then choose Tools> Folder Options>
View> choose Show Hidden Files and Folders.
- Navigate
to the following folder:
-
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program
Files\StenoCAT 32... (choose Jobs, Dictionaries,
Templates, etc.)
- Microsoft
released its Windows Vista® operating system to the
public January 30, 2007. It is important to understand that
the Vista platform is not automatically backwards-compatible
with all software and hardware originally designed to work
with Windows XP. Please allow yourself time to ensure that
all of your essential software and hardware work with Vista.
- Although
StenoCAT 32 version 5.8 is 'compatible' with Windows Vista,
it is not fully 'compliant' (meaning 'designed for') with
Vista. Customers who are using Windows Vista may experience
unknown problems and potential down time (not necessarily
related to StenoCAT 32 itself), and should allow time to
test and ensure everything is working. StenoCAT 32 versions
5.8 and older are designed for use on a 32-bit Windows XP
operating system, as described in the software license.
- Gigatron
is working towards a fully Vista compliant upgrade for StenoCAT
32 and will make it available after it has been thoroughly
tested to meet the high demands of the court reporting environment.
- Ultimately,
our priority - like yours - is the integrity of the transcript.
We understand the critical role StenoCAT 32 plays in your
ability to perform and, therefore, the confidence you place
in us when you take us to work every day

Vista Feedback:
To date, we have had mixed reviews with Windows Vista as an
operating system. Most of these issues have to do with hardware
compatibility, learning a new operating system, and some lesser
known items such as new automatic popups. We have not encountered
any specific issues with StenoCAT 32 version 5.8 that relate directly
to Vista other than those mentioned above.
